Badger promise sees work restart

21 September 2009 - BBC News
Construction of a controversial £20m bus scheme in Hampshire has restarted
after the county council agreed not to disturb badger setts. Work on the Bus Rapid Transit scheme between Gosport and Fareham was halted
when campaigners won an injunction over claims animals may be at risk. But clearance work has been allowed to continue after Hampshire County
Council agreed to measures to protect animals.
The council won a variation to the injunction to continue work on the bus
route, which will be partly built along an old railway line. The authority agreed to monitor and maintain existing badger setts, relocate
reptiles and install temporary reptile fencing. However, the new injunction does stop any work to remove the disused and
derelict railway track near the badger setts.
