Badgers chosen over hockey pitch
25 February 2007 - BBC News
Badgers in south-west London scored a victory as proposals to build
a hockey pitch on their feeding ground was withdrawn by the local
council.
Earlier this year Richmond Council planned to build an
all-weather hockey pitch to replace the one at Teddington School on
Broom Road.
Following petitions from residents and an ecological survey, the proposal was voted out by council members.
The council is currently looking for an alternative venue for the pitch.
Leader of the council, Cllr Serge Lourie, said: "The
council is committed to preserving wildlife in the borough and are
looking to see if the proposed hockey pitch is on an important badger's
key feeding area.
"We will be looking at alternative sites for the much used and needed all-weather hockey pitch".
The council's ecology department objected to the plan
saying it violated the 1992 Badger Protection Act and that the feeding
ground was vital for badgers in the area.
